Highly robust crystalsome via directed polymer crystallization at curved liquid/liquid interface
Lipids and amphiphilic block copolymers spontaneously self-assemble in water to form a plethora of micelles and vesicles. They are typically fluidic in nature and often mechanically weak for applications such as drug delivery and gene therapeutics. Mechanical properties of polymeric materials could be improved by forming crystalline structures. However, most of the self-assembled micelles and v...
متن کاملSlow process in confined polymer melts: layer exchange dynamics at a polymer solid interface.
Employing Molecular Dynamics simulations of a chemically realistic model of 1,4-polybutadiene between graphite walls we show that the mass exchange between layers close to the walls is a slow process already in the melt state. For the glass transition of confined polymers this process competes with the slowing down due to packing effects and intramolecular rotation barriers.
متن کاملBimodal crystallization at polymer-fullerene interfaces.
The growth-kinetics of [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) crystals, on two different length-scales, is shown to be controlled by the thickness of the polymer layer within a PCBM-polymer bilayer. Using a model amorphous polymer we present evidence, from in situ optical microscopy and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), that an increased growth-rate of nanoscale crystals im...
متن کاملDirect observation of prefreezing at the interface melt-solid in polymer crystallization.
Crystallization is almost always initiated at an interface to a solid. This observation is classically explained by the assumption of a reduced barrier for crystal nucleation at the interface. However, an interface can also induce crystallization by prefreezing (i.e., the formation of a crystalline layer that is already stable above the bulk melting temperature). We present an atomic force micr...
متن کاملNormal and shear forces generated during the ordering (directed assembly) of confined straight and curved nanowires.
The effects of shape on nanowire interactions and shear-induced ordering were studied. Both the normal and lateral forces were sensitive to the particles' curvature. (i) No adhesion was observed between the confining surfaces, and the force profiles were short-ranged and mostly reversible for straight wires but longer-ranged and irreversible for curved wires. (ii) Structural phase transitions c...
